Scott Sheffield began his career as a production and reservoir engineer for Amoco Production Co. He later joined Parker & Parsley as a petroleum engineer and later rose to the position of vice president of engineering in September 1981 then later elected president and a director before he became chairman of the board and CEO.

In 1997, Scott Sheffield became the founding CEO and director of Pioneer Natural Resources where he served till 2016, when he retired. However, he came back to Pioneer as President & CEO upon the retirement of successor CEO Timothy Dove.
