in a small technology startup called Great Plains Software. He was the CEO of the company and it grew into a successful large software company.

Doug Burgum managed Microsoft Business Solutions after selling his company to Microsoft. He was the founder of Kilbourne Group and also a board chairman for Atlassian and SuccessFactors and also a co-founder of Arthur Ventures, a software venture capital group.

After becoming a successful businessman, he ventured into politics and he expressed his intention to run for governor of North Dakota as a Republican. At first, he lost the state Republican party’s gubernatorial endorsement to Wayne Stenehjem. However, two months later he defeated Wayne and won the general Gubernatorial election in 2016.

In 2020, Doug Burgum run for reelection and won the election against veterinarian Shelley Lenz.

On June 7th, 2023, Doug Burgum announced his plan to campaign in the 2024 United States Presidential election.
