Ijeoma Uchegbu Early Life and Education

Ijeoma Uchegbu was born in London, United Kingdom. She grew up in Hackney and South East of Nigeria. She went to the University of Benin where she obtained her degree in Pharmacy. 

Ijeoma Uchegbu also holds a master’s degree from the University of Lagos. Thereafter, she proceeded with her Ph.D. but unfortunately couldn’t complete her PhD in Nigeria due to infrastructure difficulties in the 80s. However, she completed her Ph.D. at the University of London.

Ijeoma Uchegbu Career

Ijeoma Uchegbu began her career as a lecturer at the University of Strathclyde in 2002. She was made a Chair in Drug Delivery at the university where she worked on polymer self-assembly, identifying materials that could form stable nanosystems.

In 2006, Ijeoma Uchegbu joined the University College London as a Chair in Pharmaceutical Nanoscience at the School of Pharmacy. She led a research group that investigated molecular design and dosage of pharmaceuticals and also designed polymers that self-assemble into nanoparticles with the appropriate properties to transport drugs.

In 2010, Ijeoma Uchegbu and Andreas Schätzlein founded Nanomerics, a pharmaceutical company that uses nanotechnology platforms to develop medicine. She served as the Chief Scientific Officer at Nanomerics and serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Controlled Release.

In December 2023, it was made known to the public that Ijeoma Uchegbu would become the President of Wolfson College, Cambridge in October 2024. Before her appointment, she served as the Pro-Vice Provost for Africa and the Middle East. She has also won several awards for her works in science and has also published several books on Pharmaceutical Nanoscience.
