Baba Vanga whose full name is Vangeliya Pandeva Gushterova was born on October 3rd, 1911 in Ottoman Empire. She was born as a premature baby and suffered from health complications. Her dad worked as an Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization activist in the Pro-Bulgarian branch and was later conscripted into the Bulgarian Army during World War 1.

During her childhood, she had to depend on the care and charity of close family, friends, and neighbors as her parent were not available. After the war, she and her father moved to Novo Selo which she described as a turning point in her life. She encountered a tornado that lifted her into the air and threw her into a nearby field. This occurrence led to her blindness as her eyes were covered with sand and dust where she was found.

In 1925, Vangeliya Pandeva Gushterova went to a school for the blind in the city of Zemun, where she was taught to read Braille, play the piano, knit, cook, and clean. After spending three years at the school, she returned home to take care of her younger siblings.

During World War II, Baba Vanga became popular for her ability to heal and soothsay as people visited her hoping to get a hint about whether their relatives were alive or dead. Although after the war, the Bulgarian police tried to suppress Vanga’s activities but people still continued to see her.

In 1960, Baba Vanga was employed by the Petrich Municipality and Institute of Suggestology. She was semi-literate as she could read in Braille but couldn’t write any books herself. However, she has staff that captured all her future predictions for each year until 5079 when she claims the world would end.
