Yomi Awoniyi was born on September 4, 1960, in Lagos State, Nigeria. He completed his early education at Government Secondary School Okene before he attended Barewa College, Zaria where he obtained his WASCE. 

Yomi Awoniyi went to the High School of Basic Studies, Zaria before he attended Ahmadu Bello University where he obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Architecture. He also holds a Master’s degree in Architecture from the same university. He also has a Master’s degree in Urban Development Planning from the University College, London.
