Halima Shehu ventured into politics in 2010 and she was appointed as a Senior Special Assistant to former Governor of Katsina State, Ibrahim Shema. She was also a member of the Katsina State Board of Internal Revenue.

In 2016, Halima Shehu was appointed by the Economic Community of West African Countries where she temporarily served as a presidential election observer in Cape Verde. She also served at the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development.

On October 18, 2023, Halima Shehu was appointed as the new National Coordinator and Chief Executive Officer of the National Social Investment Programme Agency. Before she was appointed NSIPA boss, she served as the National Coordinator of the Cash Transfer Programme.
