Bello Maitama Yusuf was born on April 14, 1947 in Gwaram, Jigawa State, Nigeria. He completed his early education in a local high school in Jigawa state where he grew up with his parent before he proceeded to Ahmadu Bello University where he obtained his degree. He also holds a degree from the Northgate University, Washington.

Bello Maitama Yusuf began his career as a businessman right after he finished university. He is the founder of Quartz Integrated Services Nigeria Limited, a renowned and very influential construction company in Kano. Later on, he became the chairman of the board of four other construction companies which made him one of the youngest multi-millionaires at that time.

Bello Maitama Yusuf was also a lawyer who served as a chief registrar at the Chief Magistrate Court in Kano. Furthermore, he ventured into politics where he became a member of the Constituent Assembly. He was later appointed as the Minister of Interior in 1979 before becoming Minister of Social Welfare, Youth, Sports and Culture. He held this position for a few months before he was appointed as the Minister of Commerce from 1982 to 1983. 

In 1999, Bello Maitama Yusuf was elected as the Senator for Jigawa South West where he served for two tenures. Furthermore, he played a key role in attacking the Third Term Agenda and indicting President Obasanjo for mismanaging a petroleum development fund. Before, his retirement, he was given the title “Sarduanan Dutse” in Jigawa.
