Len Goodman Early Age and Education 

Leonard Gordon Goodman popularly known as Len Goodman was born on April 25, 1944, in Farnborough. He grew up with his grandfather in Bethnal Green, East London.

Len Goodman’s grandfather worked as a costermonger selling fruit and vegetables.

When Len Goodman was six years, he moved to Blackfen where he completed his early education at Westwood Secondary modern school and was a member of the cricket team.

Len Goodman Career

Len Goodman began his career as an apprentice welder for Harland and Wolff in Woolwich. At the age of  19, he began dancing after his doctor recommended it as therapy for a foot injury.

After years of practice, Len Goodman became a professional dancer and he won several awards to his name. After he won the British Championships at Blackpool in his late 20s, he retired.

During his dancing years, he was a recipient of the Carl Alan Award, in recognition of outstanding contributions to dancing.

From 2004 to 2016, Len Goodman was the head judge on the UK television dancing program named “Strictly Come Dancing” where several celebrities competed for the Glitterball trophy. Goodman ran a ballroom dance in Kent. At the end of the 2016 series, he announced that he was leaving the show and his final appearance was on the Christmas Day Special.

Aside from the dancing competition program, Len Goodman hosted and presented many programs and documentaries on different TV channel stations and even on a radio station before he retired to spend time with his family in Great Britain.

Len Goodman was married to Cherry Kingston but they later divorced in 1972. He later had a long-term relationship with Lesley and they had a son named James.

In 2012, Len Goodman married Sue Barrett, a 47 years old dance teacher in a small ceremony at Mosimann’s.

Len Goodman was known to be west ham fan and he was featured on the BBC football focus show in September 2009. That same year, he was featured in the celebrity Ashes cricket match in Van Nuys, California.

In 2011, Len Goodman took part in the BBC’s Who Do You Think You Are? On the show, he discovered that one of his maternal ancestors was a very poor silk weaver who died in the Bethnal Green workhouse.

In 2009, Len Goodman was diagnosed with prostate cancer which was treated and he also had surgery for a small facial melanoma. However, he later died on April 22, 2023, from bone cancer in a hospice in Royal Tunbridge Wells.
