Juan Merchan Early Life and Education

Juan Merchan was born in 1962 or 1963 in Bogota, Colombia and when he was six years old, he emigrated to New York City, where he grew up as the last born of six children in Jackson Heights, Queens.

Juan Merchan graduated from Baruch College in Manhattan, where he obtained a Bachelor of Business Management. He holds a Juris Doctor from Hofstra University Maurice A. Deane School of Law, Long Island.

Juan Merchan Career

Juan Merchan began his career after earning his law degree, as an assistant district attorney in the Manhattan Distr ict Attorney Office. He served in both the office’s Investigation Division and Trial Division, prosecuting financial fraud and other cases. He later worked as the Deputy Attorney General in charge, Nassau County region for the New York State Attorney General’s office. From 2003 -2006, he served as the Assistant Attorney General in-Charge of Affirmative Litigation for Nassau and Suffolk Counties and then as Assistant Attorney General in-Charge Nassau County Region.

In 2006, Juan Merchan was appointed judge over the Family Court of the City of New York, Bronx County by the New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

In 2009, Juan Merchan became an acting Justice in the Supreme Court of New York, New York County, when he was appointed by Chief Administrative Judge Ann Pfau. Since then, he has served in that position till date, presiding over felony criminal trials such as Donald Trump, Steve Bannon, etc.

On the 4th of April, 2023, Juan Merchan oversaw the arraignment of former U.S. President Donald Trump on 34 felony counts and the indictment of Trump, handed up by a grand jury was unsealed the same day but Trump pleaded not guilty.
