George Akume was born on December 27, 1953, in Wannune Tarka Council Area of Benue state. He completed his early education at Government Secondary School, Otobi now Model Science School, Otukpo. He went to St. Louis College for his Advanced level before he proceeded to the University of Ibadan for his Bachelor of Science Degree in Sociology.

George Akume holds a Master’s Degree in Industrial and Labour Relations from the same university.

George Akume Career

George Akume as served as the governor of Benue state for two terms of four years. after that, he won the election for the position of representing Benue North-West Senatorial District from 2007 to 2019. He won the first and second tenures under the Action Congress of Nigeria while on the last tenure, he was elected as senator under the All Progressive Party. During this period, he was a ranking member of the Senate and the chairman Senate committee on the Army.

During President Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure from 2019 to 2023, he worked as the minister of Special Duties and Inter-governmental Affairs. On May 2nd, 2023, he was appointed as the Secretary to the Government of the Federation by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
